Snow Pack for February 07, 2007

Wednesday, February 07, 2007

By Brigid Mander

Springtime in February

The few inches of snow received over the weekend lifted people’s spirits and improved the snow quality on many aspects immensely. It was back to winter for a few days, and we actually skied some pretty deep powder on Sunday.

However, this week calls for high temperatures, bringing a host of snow issues. The upsetting snow situation continues with a new twist, as warm temperatures continue to cook the snow pack at all elevations. Wet slides and point releases are something to watch for, as temperatures have been rapidly climbing in the morning to make south facing slopes incredibly gooey and heavy by mid-day.

Perhaps we’ll get some snow, but it doesn’t look too promising. For now, we will just watch our snow melt away down the hillsides.

Due to the warmth at all elevations, it is wise to head out earlier into the backcountry. Avy danger may rise with these temperatures as the day goes on, most notably on southerly slopes. North facing slopes have not been as affected by the high temperatures so far, although we noticed some recently that were a little heavier while others remained dry.
