Snow Pack for March 21, 2007

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

By Brigid Mander

Risk rises with temps
When the snow starts to melt, it’s always difficult for winter recreationists, but this year it’s been particularly harsh.

Temperatures are so hot that the snow warms up incredibly fast. It is pretty worrisome when you think about how long our ski season is going to last as the snow gets gooey and wet all the way through and we say so long to any semblance of good conditions in most areas.

The past week, the snow was as close to the slowest, stickiest and wettest I’ve ever skied. Skiers are already hiking through mud to get in and out of the backcountry; they have been since mid-March, in fact.

The rapid heating of the snow everyday gives little leeway timewise to get out to what you want to ski. Avalanche danger will rise quickly with the temperatures, with danger of point release slides, wet slab slides and the weak buried layers that still have the potential to fail.
