Snow Pack for April 4, 2007

Avalanche conditions changing
Over a foot of new snow has breathed life back into the ski season, thankfully creating amazing ski conditions in the Tetons. The hot sun is soon to return, though, so you better get out while the getting is good.

Be aware. With the new snow, avalanche conditions have changed considerably. After weeks of lower danger, there are a few major things to take into consideration this week.

Wind slabs created by strong winds during and after the recent storm are a concern on leeward slopes; drifting snow accumulated deeply in some spots.  The sun will be heating up the snow rapidly each day, as temperatures are predicted to rise into the upper 40s and mid-50s this week.

And since the new snow rests on top of slick crusts, there’s a potential for very large slides, creating some scary avalanche conditions.

So, this week might not be the week to get after super burly lines, but enjoy the powder on some mellower terrain until the snow pack stabilizes again.
