Snow pack for April 11, 2007

Spring 'pack waits for motivated few
Last Monday’s deposit of about a foot of new snow brought April in with a bang and a final hurrah for many skiers this season. Amazing, fairly light snow (for this time of year) skied incredibly well for about a day and a half. Then higher temperatures cooked it a bit. But it was good fun while it lasted.

Skiers chomping at the bit to get out and get some in the backcountry released some large slab slides and sloughs, but luckily without incident. By now, the snow has stabilized and has become a fairly typical springtime snow pack, with the melt-freeze cycle back in business and corn snow skiing making people pretty happy.

By this time of year, after such a dull season, the amount of people still interested in snow sports has dwindled considerably, but the snow remains up high for those with motivation. Avy danger is pretty low for the most part, but as always, a chance for isolated snow movement is always possible.

Right now, however, the biggest concern for most people is to get out early. Bring enough sun block and pound enough water to remain somewhat hydrated.
