Who needs a bicycle fitting?

Some more of my favorite bike shop quotes: “I don’t need a fitting, I’m not a racer,” “I’m a 54 in a road bike and a 16 in a mountain bike,” “Can you just tell me real quick what size I am?”

What’s so funny about these statements? First, everyone benefits from a fitting, especially a recreational rider or someone new to the sport. The better your bike fits, the more likely you are to want to ride it. Therefore, a comfortable bike has more value to you because you’ll actually use it!

Next, it’s impossible these days to say what size bike you are because every company sizes differently. One company’s 54 could be another’s 56.  Bicycle sizing is as lame as ordering a Venti coffee!

Finally, if you’ve been through a fitting you know it’s impossible for a qualified fitter to determine what size bike will work for you without going through a comprehensive evaluation. Be wary of anyone who tells you what size you are based off measurements alone. A quality fitting will take into account your flexibility, injury history, riding history, work environment and more. Get yourself a large coffee and go get fit.
