Sharma, climbing, beer, swag: Friday
Wednesday, September 26, 2007
By Grace Hammond
Jackson Hole, Wyo.-The notorious Chris Sharma, official ass-kicker and doe-eyed climbing
ingénue, makes the girls drool and the boys … well, drool.
See him like he was meant to be seen: on the biggest, most bad-ass
screen you can find, in “King Lines” at 8 p.m. on Friday in the
Playmill Theater at 50 W. Broadway as part of the Reel Rock Tour.
Sharma, 26, has been climbing for over a decade. In the film “King
Lines,” he trolls the planet in search of “the most outrageous rock
formations” the Earth has given birth to. He hits up every corner of
the globe, including the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, where he
climbs a 60-foot rock arch with sea on all sides without a rope and
takes more than 100 falls into the water. The footage of that climb
alone, featured in “King Lines,” already won an Emmy.
Climbing filmmakers Josh Lowell and Peter Mortimer hook up for this
film, raising the ante for dramatic cinematography, shooting from zip
lines and helicopters. Lowell, of Big UP Productions, has over half a
dozen climbing films under his belt. Mortimer, of Sender Films, has
massed awards for First Ascent, Return2Sender and Front Range Freaks.
Before “King Lines,” local shooter/climber David Gonzales will show two
shorts, one from the Snaz and a short compilation called “Committed”
that shows “sketchy rock climbing in Great Britain,” he said.
There’s beer for purchase and free swag for every one who walks through the door. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets cost $10 in advance at Cloudveil and the Enclosure Rock Gym, or
$12 at the door. Also, 1% of ticket sales will go to 1% for the Tetons.
Watch the sweat-inducing, heart-walloping trailer on
www.TheSnaz.com and remember to shut your jaw again when you’re through.
