Interbike

By Scott Fitzgerald

It’s that time of the year again: another road trip to Vegas for the world’s largest bicycle trade show – Interbike. We’ll be spending the whole week riding all the latest gear and scouring the convention center for the coolest new ’cycle candy with which to tempt you.

As usual, the Interbike tradition is not complete without returning to dozens of variations of the question “See anything new for next year?” My usual answer – “Not really, just more carbon” – never seems to fulfill the secret desires of the person asking the question.

Subconsciously they really want to hear, “Oh man, they finally figured out helium filled tubes” or “Say good-bye to spokes, it’s all about high powered lasers holding your wheel in place now.”

The fact is bikes are bikes. Of course the belt-drive singlespeed from Spot is very cool, and it’s great to finally see the new RED road group from SRAM. In the end, through, what it really comes down to is meeting the people who make the stuff we ride. There are a lot of great bikes out there, but knowing that the person who designed it is a true bike aficionado and not some chain-smoking businessman is the best part!
