Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Just when you think it’s okay to start letting your cycling fitness slack a bit, some crazy cycling nut announces a local mountain bike race scheduled in January! Dave Byers, winter biking junkie, has taken local racing to a new level by organizing the Togwotee Winter Classic Snow Bike Race. On January 19 racers will have the option of a 25 mile loop with 2100 feet of climbing, or a 100 mile loop with 9500 feet of climbing. Both races will start and finish at the beautiful Togwotee Mountain Lodge.

How is it possible to ride bikes in January up in the mountains?  Because of the recent boom in snow bike specific equipment. A handful of locals saw the light last winter and invested in fat tired snow bikes that are perfectly suited to riding on the hundreds of miles of singletrack strewn throughout our region. Yes, I got addicted myself. When the high pressure settles in this year (as it always does) I won’t be longing for the next powder cycle, I’ll be riding epic mountain bike loops in preparation for this amazing race!
