Snow pack for November 7, 2007

By Ben Cannon

Is it ever too early to wonder?
While there was some mighty fine skiing on Teton Pass around the third week of October, much of the remaining snow has gone the way of the dodo. And with local meteorology guru Jim Woodmencey, of www.MountainWeather.com, out on fall break, it seems Riders of the Snow are destined to maintain whatever uncertain holding pattern they can for at least a few more weeks.

The Weather Channel suggests next week could bring a wintry mixture of rain and snow. With a prediction of temperatures in the valley reaching only the mid-30s, a few days of cold precipitation up high could potentially set up nice conditions on The Pass.

The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center recently recorded its first hotline (733-2664) update of the season. It’s only a “welcome back from summer” message and a test-run for the service.  “We’ll start the daily avalanche forecasts once we get a little more snow,” Avalanche Center Director Bob Comey says.

So go ahead and program in the forecast number on your phone. It might soon become a familiar ritual.
