Swap your gear with ’Ghee Team’s ‘Tugboat’ memorial ski swap

If you slept through last week’s Jackson Hole Ski Club Gear Swap, showed up late to find that everything had been picked through, or were so out to lunch that you didn’t even know about it, this weekend you have one more chance to sell your old winter sports gear and possibly pick up some new used stuff for cheap.

The Grand Targhee Ski Team hosts its 19th annual Tugboat Memorial Ski Swap 4-8 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday in the Driggs Community Center, located on Hwy. 33 just south of the four corners that makes downtown Driggs, Idaho. Admission is $5 on Friday and $2 on Saturday.

If you are looking to sell gear, early equipment check-in will take place on 3-6 p.m. on Thursday at Peaked Sports in Driggs. Check-in will continue at the community center noon-8 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

The Grand Targhee Ski Team will keep 20 percent of all sales in return for selling your gear at the swap. Proceeds help keep ski team programs affordable.
“We really want to encourage people in Jackson to bring their stuff out,” said Scott Cullins, swap organizer.

Cullins noted that many people don’t find what they need or aren’t able to sell their gear at the Jackson swap. This weekend’s swap represents a second chance to do either – or both.

Cullins also pointed out that because people can check in gear throughout the swap, good deals on quality gear can still be found even on Saturday, the second day of the event.

“There’s a good volume of good equipment that lasts into Saturday,” said Cullins.
The swap is named after “Tugboat” Terry Palmer, a man who, after running the NASTAR program at Gand Targhee in the late ’70s, was the inspiration behind a few Alta residents starting the Grand Targhee Ski Team in 1979, according to Cullins.

He was the team’s first coach and ran the race program for a decade until he died in a car accident. He loved kids and always encouraged them to race, Cullins said.
