Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Sure, sure – there hasn’t been a lot of action on the deep snow front in our area yet, but Teton Pass has been full of skiers getting primed for when the snow does come. So far, people have been out there, the south side of the Pass has had some fun soft snow (at least, before you get too low), and kickers have sprung up en masse. The snow has seen a lot of traffic though, so it is about time for some new snowfall.
Forecasters are calling for snow throughout the week. Optimistically, we can say goodbye to bare hillsides for many months. With so little snow, avalanche activity have been minimal. The new snow will be falling on a mostly consolidated snowpack, but some surface hoar grew last week, creating a potential weak layer. Strong winds are expected to accompany the snow early in the week, so beware of wind-loaded starting zones.
Hopefully, after this week, winter will be in full swing (and the Village desperately needs a boost before opening day, or it is going to be a pretty funny scene on Dec. 1). So we can only wait and see, but after all, we deserve a little payback this time around.
