Funky snowpack in the making

Recent snowfall has resulted in great conditions up high, and it is finally getting pretty fun up in the Tetons. A few storm systems have moved through the area, and we’ve seen decent snowfall accumulating over the weekend and earlier this week. Snow is forecast through the week as well, so let’s hope for more fluff and white days.

This is not, however, shaping up as the most stable snowpack. There are plenty of signs pointing to another season of curious snowfall where avalanche danger is concerned. Similar to the nasty layers that last year gave many backcountry skiers pause, weak buried layers look poised to haunt the backcountry.

With the new snow and winds, loads on these layers will be increasing, as will avy danger. The first burial of the season was reported near Bondurant, where, according to the BTNF avy report, a snowmobiler was rescued by capable companions after a slide on Sunday. If you needed a little incentive to brush up on your transceiver skills, this is a blatant hint to get in a little practice.
