Season to update avalanche gear

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

By Brigid Mander

After a week of little snowy action and bitter temperatures, some significant snowfall has arrived that will, hopefully, continue all week. Avalanche danger has risen from moderate to considerable for upper elevations under the new loads and winds. Winds have been variable, resulting in cross-loaded ridgetops, gullies and other terrain features. Pay attention to avalanche forecasts throughout the week.

This time of year, people are looking for tangible gifts, not just Christmas powder. Buying or updating avalanche gear is a big investment, and now’s the time to set your sights on the top of the line safety products - when other people will buy it for you! Breakthroughs over the last few years in avalanche transceiver technology mean many new choices.

I recently came upon a website, www.beaconreviews.com that was created by Steve Achelis, Commander of the Salt Lake County Search and Rescue. It is a one-stop shop for easy explanations and thorough, honest reviews of transceivers. If you are in the market, or just want to understand your unit better, you should definitely check out what Achelis has to say.
