Don't get broke by your stoke

By Brigid Mander

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-A flurry of recent storms and deep days has brought us the best skiing of the season so far. Storms  dropped more than two feet of new snow, with snowfall of varying potential expected all week. The skiing is shaping up, but recent avalanche activity has also provided a sobering counterpoint to the stoke right now.

The first avalanche fatality in Wyoming this season occurred last Wednesday when a snowmobiler in the Medicine Bow Mountains died from an injury sustained in a slide. In our area, after last weekend’s snowfall and high avalanche danger, a spate of skier-triggered avalanches were seen in the backcountry south of JHMR and in GTNP.   Skiers were carried in several of those but uninjured. On Teton Pass, a snowboarder was injured but lucky to survive a cornice break, being dragged over 50 foot cliff and subsequent large step-down avalanche.

This week, more snow is expected and the powder is going to get even better. If you are going to get out there right away, make sure to practice safe route finding and choose your lines carefully - there will be plenty of pow.
