The slow warm

By Brigid Mander

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-As we approach the middle of April, plenty of powder remains at mid and upper elevations. So far, much of this snow has not yet been ruined by annoying spring intrusions. However, it is necessary to keep in mind that the air temperatures and the snow are warming up, slowly but surely.

Although overall movement is still relatively low, natural failures on steep slopes have been observed and the new snow we have received recently lies on a slick crust. Most cracks we have observed recently were not very deep, up to about six inches, but that can be scary depending on where you are skiing. Deeper deposits are out there in wind-loaded areas and can be easily triggered.

Much of this week is supposed to remain mostly cloudy with snowfall, but sunny days are coming. The snow pack is going to heat up and we will likely see failures as the top layer of snow gets warm and heavier on warm days and sunny aspects. Northern aspects that see little or no sun will at least get you away from the dangers of sun affected layers, but as always, a little initial suspicion and precaution will help keep you away from going for an unwanted ride.
