Season's end

By Brigid Mander

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-To herald the arrival of May, the big snows of the 2007-08 winter continue to fall. More than a foot of winter powder dropped on the Tetons last weekend, with one day of cold smoke followed by several days of bluebird skies and more typical, warming springtime snowpack.

A lot of movement was seen on a variety of aspects, mostly just the new snow, but deeper crowns were observed as well. We are just not totally into predictable wet slide action yet if we get more cool weather and snowfall.

Temperatures have been getting fairly warm here and there, cooking the snow into serious mush and leaving rocky areas full of point releases.  But disaster hasn’t struck yet, as chilly winds help high- and mid-elevation summits stay cool. Although this often results on some crusty skiing at the tops in lieu of the hoped for corn, there will be plenty of that to come in this very extended ski touring season.

This is it for Snowpack for the season. If you haven’t gotten up high lately, you can check what the snow conditions have been on www.tetonat.com, where Steven Romeo and crew detail their always entertaining exploits in the mountains, and www.mountainweather.com for specialized local forecasts.

Thanks Brigid from the mountains in B.C! Sounds like the season is just rebeginning in the Tetons as it is here. Enjoy the touring and again, thanks!
