Saddle Sore

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

By Scott Fitzgerald

Think being saddle sore is just part of riding a bike? A little numbness is normal? Truth is, riding a bike doesn’t have to hurt. Sure, a bike will never be as plush as saddling up the old Barcalounger, but with a little effort, it can be pleasant to say the least. Usually there are two steps to choose from: admit you have a problem, or take the time to deal with the problem you know you have. The first group thinks a little numbness is normal and there isn’t a problem. Consider this: numbness is caused by a constriction of blood vessels. Once the constriction is reduced, the numbness goes away.

But what stays is a little calcium build up. Over time this calcium builds up enough to cause a permanent constriction that no amount of Viagra can help. Those of you who know there’s a problem but haven’t done anything about it, stop waiting! No, I don’t mean run out and get a cut out saddle. The first step is to make sure you are properly fit to your bike. Maybe you need a cut out saddle, but your handlebars are too low or your saddle just doesn’t line up with your sit bones. Whatever you do, don’t stop riding, just get a better fit!
