Be bear aware

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

By Scott Fitzgerald

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-It looks like mountain bike season has thankfully been extended for a little while.  Of course there will be rainy days when the trails call for a little respect from us, but in general, the fall biking still has huge potential. As you head out this fall, remember – you are not alone!  Before winter settles in, bears are looking to stock pile their bellies and hunters are looking to stock pile their freezers. A few common sense precautions go a long way.

Throw on a bright orange jersey before you head out (preferably with a shamrock on it), make sure your handlebar bell is close to your trigger finger, and throw a canister of bear spray in your water bottle holder. We tend to move quickly and silently through the forest, and it is up to us to make our presence known. Neither hunter nor bear wants to target the Montanous Velocipedous, just make sure you don’t sneak up on them.
