On Rock: Failure is good

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-You see the holds you’re shooting for, feet and body set in the best position possible. Heart pumping and hands sweating, you feel the strain and fatigue in your arms. Feeling yourself start to slip, you take a raggedy, hurried breath and lunge, feet coming off. You fall short. And there you are feeling like Larry, Moe and Curly stuck in a doorway. Even though you know it’s within you to get through the crux, you knew before you started it wasn’t going to happen. You’re not ready Daniel-san.
Failure isn’t so bad. It’s a chance to correct mistakes and weaknesses. Evaluate what went wrong. Most external factors can be addressed. Buy better gear, train harder, eat right, etc. The internal issues can be the real obstacles. Ironic, don’t you think? Leaving behind distractions and fears, keeping a level head, focusing, and trusting yourself, can be much harder than it sounds - giving it all up for that push for success.
So back in that familiar place with the rehearsed movements, effort, and mental state played perfectly in your mind for the hundredth time, you set yourself up, breathing deeply, head excited yet calm. In one fluid motion you exhale, push with your feet and lock-off one arm, keeping your core tight you reach with the other arm. The moves and holds feel that much more secure, that much easier. And there you are above it all, body, mind and spirit lifted.
