By Scott Fitzgerald

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-“We sure could use the moisture.”  Yeah, yeah, I know.  But we sure could use some dry trails too!  The latest word on the dirt is be patient and be smart. Before you grab the first sucker hole in the clouds and head out for a mountain bike ride, use some common sense. Did it rain today or yesterday?  If so, I wouldn’t even think about shady trails like Hagen, Ferrins or Jimmy’s Mom. Start with a Putt Putt or Parallel trail and assess the conditions from there.

Our south-facing dirt will dry out pretty fast if they get a little sun on them. Even a few hours of clear weather can bring some rideable trails if you choose wisely. If you find yourself riding home with a bike caked in mud – you didn’t choose wisely. The good news is, this rain is helping wash away the snow in the high country. Once summer arrives again look for some more trail options like Arrow Trail, Shadow Mountain and West Game Creek to start opening up.  Don’t force it though – patience grasshopper!
