Legends of the winter

By Matthew Irwin

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Ignorance to a region’s history may not detract from one’s ability to enjoy the natural environment, but an inherent pleasure and sense of ownership goes with knowing more about a place.

As implied in its name, the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum will introduce attendants of Jackson Hole Stories: Voices of the Valley to living keepers of valley history on topics such as skiing, fishing, music and hunting.

The winter series opens this week with Tommy Moe and Pepi Stiegler. Moe is the first U.S. alpine skier to win two medals in the same Olympics, and now he is a ski ambassador and guide for Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. A winner of the giant slalom in the 1960 Olymics, Pepi Stiegler sat as Director of Skiing at JHMR until 2002, and was inducted into the Professional Ski Instructors-Intermountain Hall of Fame in 2004.

Jackson Hole Stories is 7 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Wort Hotel (subsequent presentations will be held at Teton County library). Free. 733-9605.
