Special Olympic short on volunteers

Wednesday, February 03, 2010

By Ben Cannon

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Tim McLaurin is a veteran Special Olympics athlete. At 23, McLaurin has competed in events like downhill skiing since he was eight years old.

The Special Olympics have provided him with some of his happiest memories, like the times when he won a gold medal, or dancing at the athlete’s banquet with friends. He even shares the Special Olympics with his girlfriend, herself a past competitor.

Unfortunately, an injury will force McLaurin to experience this year’s games from the sidelines. But he’s not going to be just a spectator.

McLaurin said he’s looking forward to volunteering for this year’s Special Olympics winter games, which will be held Feb. 9 and 10 at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. He thinks a lot of people should consider doing the same.

“I would say it’s great for people to volunteer,” said McLaurin, who has Down’s Syndrome. “They will have a great time hanging out with the athletes. It’s a lot of fun.”

There’s a sizable shortage of volunteers, according to volunteer organizer Kelli Jones. Jones said about 200 people are needed to staff all the events and support stations, but currently less than 100 have signed up to help.

“We are very desperate,” said Jones, who attributed the shortfall on a community where people often decide things last-minute.

Special Olympics volunteers assist with events like snowshoeing, cross-country and alpine skiing and snowboarding. People can request to help with events in which they possess expertise, or can stay off the snowy courses by working at an awards station or hospitality tent. Those with any interest in sports like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing can volunteer to be “leads” and “tails” that help guide and keep track of athlete heats, or race groups. No experience is required to volunteer and volunteers will be trained on the spot, Jones said.

“This is a great way to get involved in your community and meet a lot of wonderful people,” Jones said. “Without the volunteers, the Special Olympics are not possible.
Volunteers are needed to fill two time slots – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 to 5 p.m. To sign up as a volunteer call Jones, 690-0571 or 690-4551. JHW
