Out of hibernation

Jackson Hole, Wyo.-The long, cold winter is over and your bikes want to come out of hibernation. Just like the first ski of the year, though, the first commute to work, or grocery store ride can seem a little daunting. I’d ride my bike but ... it wasn’t tuned up last fall. The tires must be flat from bad tubes. I’m pretty sure I loaned my bike helmet, bike shoes, bike clothing, saddle bag and fenders to the dude who used to live next door. It’s too cold for a bike ride. The roads aren’t clear. I’m so out of shape I won’t make it back home before the Ben & Jerry’s melts.
OK, take a minute to to consider the following: No, you totally spaced the fall tune up, so call your shop ASAP to get an appointment. Your tires aren’t flat, just pump them up and you can ride your bike down to the shop to drop it off. You didn’t loan out any of your gear, it’s in the garage bin labeled “summer stuff” (next to the X-mas stuff, and camping stuff bins). You just skied all winter in negative temps, suck it up and brave the 50 degree, 20-minute commute to work.
The roads have been buffed out for a month already. Again, you just skied all winter, so don’t give me the “I’m too out of shape to ride.” Now go ride to the store ... I would, except I can’t find that little strap that keeps my pant leg from catching in the chain ...
