1656 – The first Jewish doctor arrives in the United States (Dr. Jacob Lumbrozo in Maryland).
1899 – The rubber heel is patented, by Humphrey O’Sullivan.
1984 – Apple unveils its Macintosh.
January 25
1870 – Gustavus Dows patents the soda fountain.
1985 – “We Are The World” is recorded.
1989 – Michael Jordan, in his fifth season, scores his 10,000th NBA point.
January 26
1666 – Haley’s Comet passes the Earth for the fifth recorded time.
1689 – Jean Racine’s “Esther”
premieres.
1784 – Ben Franklin is pissed that the eagle was chosen as the symbol of the United States.
January 27
1870 – The first sorority in the U.S. opens – Kappa Alpha Theta at DePauw University.
1927 – The Harlem Globetrotters play their first game ever, in
Hinckley, Ill. It will be 39 years before they play a game in Harlem.
1948 – The first tape recorder is sold.
January 28
1914 – Beverly Hills, Calif., is
incorporated.
1915 – President Wilson refuses to prohibit immigration of illiterates.
1934 – The first U.S. ski tow becomes operational, in Woodstock, Vt.
January 29
1958 – Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward marry.
1964 – Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” premieres.
1967 – “Let’s Sing Yiddish” closes after not too many performances.
January 30
1847 – Yerba Buena is renamed San Francisco.
1922 – World Law Day is first celebrated.
1969 – The Beatles perform their last gig together, a 42-minute concert on top of Apple Record’s Headquarters in London.
