1942 – Cornelius Warnerdam becomes the first person to clear 15 feet on an indoor pole vault.
1962 – Jane Fonda makes her acting debut on NBC’s “A String of Beads.”
1964 – Baskin-Robbins introduces a new flavor of ice cream: Beatle Nut. On the same day, the Beatles land at JFK for their first American tour.
February 8 1802 – Simon Willard patents the Banjo Clock.
1887 – The first ski club in the U.S. forms (the Aurora Club of Red Wing, MN). 1915 – “Birth of a Nation” premieres in Los Angeles.
February 9 1934 – The coldest day ever recorded in NYC: -14.3 degrees F.
1969 – The 747 makes its first commercial flight.
1997 – “The Simpsons” becomes the longest running animated series in television history.
February 10 1863 – P.T. Barnum stages the wedding of Tom Thumb and Mercy Warren.
1920 – Baseball outlaws all pitches involving tampering with the ball.
1940 – “Tom and Jerry” debut; “In the Mood” hits #1.
February 11 660 B.C. – Emperor Jimmu Tenno allegedly founds Japan.
1942 – “Archie” comic book debuts. 1978 – China lifts a ban on Aristotle, Shakespeare and Dickens. It retains its ban, however, on “Archie.”
February 12 1879 – The first artificial ice rink in the U.S. opens, at Madison Square Garden. 1964 – The Beatles play Carnegie Hall. 1995 – Sun Cayun sets a women’s indoor pole vault record at 4.13 meters (13.55 feet).
February 13 1924 – King Tut’s tomb is opened.
1959 – “Barbie” goes on sale.
1982 – Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” enters its 402nd week on the charts.
