1066 – Westminster Abbey opens.
1883 – The first vaudeville theater in the United States opens, in Boston.
1976 – “Love Will Keep Us Together” wins big at the Grammys.
March 11962 – The first Kmart opens.
1969 – After 88 weeks, the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” falls off the charts.
1970 – U.S. commercial whale hunting officially ends.
March 21867 – Howard University is established.
1927 – Babe Ruth becomes the highest paid player in baseball, earning $70,000 a year.
1933 – “King Kong,” the movie not the ape, premieres at Radio City Music Hall.
March 31955 – Elvis is on television!
1978 – Charlie Chaplin’s remains are stolen in Switzerland.
1991 – Rodney King is beaten by L.A.’s finest.
March 41791 – Vermont is admitted as the 14th state.
1861 – Lincoln is inaugurated; for the first time in U.S. history, there are five living former presidents.
1863 – The territory of Idaho is established.
March 51956 – “King Kong” is on television!
1984 – In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court holds that a city may use public money to stage a nativity scene.
1994 – Grace Slick is arrested for pointing a gun at a cop; an unconfirmed report says the incident occurred after he mocked her for “We Built This City.”
March 61964 - Cassius Clay changes his name to Muhammad Ali; Liz Taylor gets her third divorce; Jonathan MacLaren is born.
