1972 – The Rolling Stones flee England for France to escape paying taxes; while there, they record “Exile on Main Street.”
1987 – Ski jumper Piotr Fijas jumps a world record 194 meters.
1993 – “Nunsense” is performed for the 3,000th time.

1827 – Freedom’s Journey, the first black newspaper in the U.S., is first published.
1913 – Cleveland establishes the first Small Claims Court.
1923 – Lenin has his third stroke.

1871 – The county’s first fertilizer law is enacted.
1910 – Barney Oldfield (the racer not the former mayor of Jackson) sets a land speed record of 131.7 mph.
1918 – “K-K-K-Katy,” which is allegedly not about a white supremacy organization groupie, is released.

1957 – The Dutch begin to allow people to drive on Sundays.
1959 – The Dali Lama flees Tibet for India.
1961 – South Africa leaves the British Commonwealth.

1881 – The Greatest Show on Earth debuts at Madison Square Garden.
1961 – Poppin’ Fresh Pillsbury Dough Boy is introduced.
1963 – The U.S. Supreme Court holds that all defendants have a right to be represented by a lawyer.

721 B.C. – A lunar eclipse is recorded for the first time, in Babylon.
1918 – Congress authorizes time zones and Daylight Saving Time.
1928 – “The Amos and Andy Show” debuts on the radio.

1852 – Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is published.
1958 – 50 inches of snow falls over the Mason Dixon Line.
1994 – “Indecent Proposal” wins worst picture at the 14th annual Razzies.
