1906 – The San Francisco Earthquake kills 4,000.
1968 – San Francisco’s old Hall of Justice is demolished.

1775 – The American Revolution begins with the Shot Heard ’Round the World, in Lexington, Mass.
1897 – The first Boston Marathon is held; it is won by John McDermott in 2:55:10.
1939 – 148 years late, Connecticut – the “Constitution State” – approves the Bill of Rights.

753 B.C. The traditional date for the founding of Rome.
1600 – The epic novel “Shogun” by James Clavell begins on this date with a decapitation.
