JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. - The local hipster population increased 20 percent this weekend with the arrival of Steve Alderman, formerly of Iowa. Alderman, 23, initially said he was “disaffected” by the ruling on his hipster status.
Rebecca Dolecki, 24, a member of the Jackson indie scene, ultimately made the call.
“The hair,” she told the Planet during an interview in front of the Loaf ’n Jug. “It was the hair, mostly the bangs. That’s what we look for. Also, he’s not in high school, and that’s a big plus for us. Basically, he seems old-school. He’s 23.”
Dolecki initially approached Alderman with a question about the band Fugazi, which he answered both quietly and correctly.
This is not Alderman’s first time in town. He spent a summer in Jackson three years ago, and stated that he was bullied by his “climber roommates,” a situation that ultimately ended in Alderman losing his girlfriend of two months to a housemate.
“I just really hate athletes now,” Alderman said, removing a Lucky Strike cigarette from his rolled-up sleeve. “This is my way of taking a stand.”
Alderman eschews “the Jackson steeze of fleece, more fleece and Gore-Tex,” he said.
Back home in Iowa, Alderman was a moderately popular high school football player and member of the track team. Fate took him in a different direction on his way into town, however.
“It was bright,” Alderman said, “and I got some aviators at a gas station. It kind of set my rep the first day. To be honest, I don’t think the indie standards are that high here. I mean, I was in a frat in college.”
Alderman stated that he plans to regularly frequent underground hipster hangouts like the Internet and a local bagel shop. “I spend a lot of time at the laundromat, too, using the dryer,” he added.
Alderman later provided a PBR-fueled confession that even though he reacts with anger, he “likes it” when people call him a hipster.
“Basically, it cost me about $25 to become a hipster in this town,” Alderman said. “Usually, you have to kind of keep up with the Joneses when it comes to style, but since there are only five of us, we make our own rules.” Alderman stressed that “it’s more authentic, really.”
Alderman plans to visit Salt Lake City in the coming months, but will abandon his indie accoutrements for fear of being called a “poser” or simply “out-of-date.”
