JACKSON HOLE, WYO. – At The Musty Ferret on Sunday, July 13, guests and employees were forced to evacuate when employees noticed smoke escaping from a room in the hotel. On Tuesday, a man who calls himself ‘Sunny’ confessed to starting the fire. Sunny had been living in one of the Rusty Parrot laundry rooms for the past week when one of his dreadlocks ignited while he was hiding in the dryer.
Sunny, who claims to be from “the earth,” hitchhiked to Jackson from the Rainbow Festival, but when he arrived, to his surprise, he could not find anyone who would take him in. For two days, Sunny stood on the corner of Glenwood Street and Broadway Avenue, offering up various items of food that he obtained from a dumpster-diving session at Jackson Whole Foods, in exchange for a place to stay.
After not finding any willing victims, Sunny meandered over to The Musty Ferret and fell asleep in an empty laundry room.
So far, none of the Musty Ferret employees have admitted to knowing about Sunny’s infiltration of the hotel laundry facility. But front desk receptionist Sarah Purty said she smelled marijuana smoke coming from the area near the laundry rooms on two separate occasions in the past week. “After smelling the smoke, I went into the laundry room to investigate, but found no one,” Purty said.
Sunny claims he stuffed himself into one of the dryers any time someone entered his new domicile. And on Sunday, after the dryer had been running all day, Sunny thought he heard someone entering the room and scurried back into the dryer. Chief Foster said the intense heat mixed with the filthiness of Sunny’s dreadlocks was a blazing fury in the making.
“The unidentified male, known only as Sunny, is carrying a severe fire hazard right on his very own head,” Chief Foster said.
Surviving off dumpster-diving sessions in the alley, and running the dryer for heat at night, Sunny said he felt like he had finally found a place to call home.
“I’ve always wanted to visit all my brothers and sisters of Jackson Hole. I really thought I had found a nice home here,” Sunny said, between sobs, to police officers on Tuesday, July 14.
Owners of the Musty Ferret have yet to decide whether or not they will press charges against the ‘earthly’ fire starter.
