Jackson Hole, Wyo.-Citing high traffic during the summer, Town Council voted on Tuesday to move the northwest corner of Town Square one block south and one block east, placing the square between Broadway Avenue and Pearl Street, and King and Willow Streets. The block now houses a number of businesses and residences.
The council also voted to close the roads around the Square to car traffic and to open the Square’s park to dogs.
Just how the park will be moved and what it will cost, council members were uncertain about, but the unanimous decision-makers were confident in their decision.
“We’ll work out the details in the final proposal,” the mayor said. “This is just the conceptual phase.”
One consultant suggested giving residents and business owners first dibs on new properties around the Square, while another suggested building a frame under the Square, so they could lift it and push the other block into its place and drop the Square in its new location.
During the public comment period, a Jackson resident suggested that instead of moving Town Square they close the roads around the existing Square and divert traffic to Gill Street.
The suggestion caused an uproar among Town Square business owners, concerned that tourists would not know where to buy Jackson Hole-logo gear, Western wear and snow globes.
